Wandelen in Brugge

Not a post about the movie or the old city of Bruges

So I’m about to take you way way back into the year 2019.

Fall, November 2019. Imagine a time when it was safe to randomly say, hey let’s drive to the woods of Bruges, some 50 kilometers away. And you actually could.

It was a surprisingly good weekend in Fall of 2019, sunny and not too cold. I decided that it was time to find out what other castles are there to visit in the West Flanders area.

I researched a bit and found a great walking route called “Three Castles” Walking Route / Drie Kastelen Wandelen Route.

In my research, I found out that there are actually a lot of outdoor adventures to be had in Bruges. Here is a great flyer in English to get you started.

Tillegembos in relation to Bruges

The 3 castles walking route is quite long (12 kilometers) as it encompasses 3 domains (one for each castle). We left the house quite late so we only decided to check out only one of the castles in the Tillegem forest (I think we decided to check this because the parking was right beside the castle).

I don’t think there is an easy way to get to this place without car, but with a car, it’s quite easy and accessible. There are 3 big parking lots around the forest and you only need to target any one of them on your GPS or Google Maps. (Parking 1, Parking 2, Parking 3)

We parked at this one which was the closest one to the castle (I think!).

The forest itself is quite pretty, a nice walk. There’s a restaurant in the surroundings and lots of paths around. We got lost a bit and ended up outside the forest in the village nearby, but still it was a nice walk. Here is a link to a map of the Tillegembos

You have 2 options of a 3 km walking route and a 1.9 km suggested walking route around the forest.

The castle itself is quite nice. It’s surrounded by water and has a mini maze (if you can even call it that). I’m not sure if you can visit it, seems not, but in any case I always find castles better from the outside than the inside (with the sole exception of Windsor Castle). It would have been more interesting I think to actually see the 3 castles, but otherwise it was a pleasant time on a pleasant day.
